Liverpool could make signing that would ‘surprise everybody’ – Sky pundit

Sky Sports pundit Darren Bent is not ruling out the possibility of Jurgen Klopp pulling off a major deal in the transfer window, even though his side might not seem to be in serious need of big spending this summer.

The Liverpool manager has received a lot of plaudits lately, after an amazing season of performances which saw his team rack up 97 total points in the Premier League, as they missed out on winning the title by a mere point.

If Klopp intends to go the extra mile to help his side finish off the job by finally winning the league title next season, the Liverpool boss might need to find a younger and more dependable replacement for Joel Matip.

That player could be Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt, who captained the Dutch side to the Eredivisie title last season while reaching the semifinal of the Champions League, where they were eliminated by a last-minute Tottenham goal.

There is no doubt about the potential that De Ligt possesses and the Reds are bound to face a battle with other big clubs if they do pursue his signature.

The availability of Virgil van Dijk appears to have solved the Reds’ defensive worries but Sky Sports pundit Darren Bent has played down the possibility of Klopp adding even more quality to his defence.

According to the former Spurs star, Liverpool could pull off a surprise by snapping up De Ligt this summer.

“They may go out and surprise everybody and go and get De Ligt, Virgil’s Dutch team-mate,” Bent said, as per the Daily Star

“If they can manage to pull that one off and those two can play together, that would be brilliant.”

Liverpool’s advantage in a possible pursuit of the teenager is the fact that he has a good relationship with Van Dijk, his partner at the heart of the Netherlands defence.
