Liverpool might just have been given some encouragement in their pursuit of Nicolas Pepe, following an admission from the president of Lille.
Jurgen Klopp have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old, who was in superb form in France last term, helping Lille finish as runners-up in Ligue 1.
Daniel Sturridge’s departure means the Reds might have room for another goalscorer in the squad as Klopp looks tp put together another serious challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Liverpool boss has been rumoured to be interested in Pepe all summer, and the striker, who is priced at £70m (Daily Star), remains an attractive target for other big clubs.
According to the president of Lille, Gerard Lopez, talks have actually been held over a possible move to Anfield for the 24-year-old star.
He told RMCsport: “I know there have been discussions with the player but not with us as a club, Liverpool has players in his position, and I read that he could go there if players leave. I am not particularly focused on Liverpool. But it is true that there have been discussions with agents.
“We had two offers before the African Cup of Nations, we’ll see after that, my position was to see if we could not do something before it, we had two proposals before it, I had two clubs.”
After the expensive acquisitions of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson last year, Jurgen Klopp is yet to spend big in the transfer window this summer.
