‘Would be sensational’: Pearce drools over what will happen after 22-year-old slots into Liverpool team

Stuart Pearce has shared his excitement over how the Liverpool team will look after returning star Joe Gomez takes back his place in the starting eleven next season.

The Englishman was one of the young players who broke into the first team at Anfield during the 2017/18 campaign when the Reds finished as runners-up in the Champions League.

Gomez suffered a back injury in early December which forced him to sit out most of the games during the second half of the season.

The young centre-back lost his place in the side as Joel Matip took advantage of the playing time he was given by Jurgen Klopp, helping the team win the Champions League through a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid.

Even with Matip in the team now, Stuart Pearce believes Joe Gomez is really the ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk.

“They’ve got Gomez to come back, who I expect if he’s fully fit to play every game, and him and Van Dijk at the heart of defence would be sensational.” he said, as per the Tribuna

Pearce went on to add: “And Oxlade Chamberlain, so they’ve got two players to come back into the fold. They might not have to go in the transfer market, I think those two will improve the team drastically.”

Gomez managed to make 16 Premier League appearances this campaign, with only 32% of those games coming in the starting XI under Jurgen Klopp.
