BBC pundit Garth Cooks has suggested that Liverpool may be in danger of losing star defender Virgil van Dijk if there is an anti-climax to this season.
Liverpool were able to score a lot of goals last season but the main criticism which they attracted related to the fact that the team was seemingly incapable of defending and keeping clean sheets when it mattered.
That is exactly why the club decided to reinvest the profits made from the sale of Coutinho to Barcelona in a new defender.
After long a while of speculation, the Reds were able to complete the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in a deal which set a new record for the most expensive defender in the history of the club and the Premier League in general.
A year later, the Dutchman has become one of the most important names on the Liverpool team sheet, having won the PFA player of the year award.
However, BBC pundit Garth Cooks insists Van Dijk might not stay at Anfield if the Reds fail to win a trophy this season.
Crooks wrote in his weekly column: “I have almost run out of superlatives to describe Virgil van Dijk’s performances this season – he has featured in my team of the week more than any other player.
“What the Dutch international has brought to Liverpool’s defence is almost unquantifiable.
“I do feel however, that if Liverpool fail to win the Champions League, and that is by no means certain, it may hasten Van Dijk’s departure. Players of his class need to be playing for the best team in the world.”
