Graeme Souness names his ‘Player of the Year’ and it’s not Virgil van Dijk

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool man Graeme Souness has named his ‘Player of the Year’ for this season so far and to the surprise of most Reds fans, it is actually not Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have been battling for the Premier League title all season, less than a year after they almost clinched their sixth European crown as Real Madrid won the 2018 Champions League final.

The Reds have solved their defensive issues with the signing of  Virgil van Dijk, who arrived at the club from Southampton, back in the January transfer window last season.

The Dutch international has grown into arguably the most valuable player in the current Liverpool squad after a streak of commanding displays at the heart of the team’s defence.

Even though he has significantly helped Liverpool contend for the Premier League title, Graeme Souness still does not believe Van Dijk has been the best player this season.

In fact, the Sky pundit has chosen former Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling as the man for the top award after his efforts for Manchester City this term.

“Sterling left Anfield, at 20 and he’s been sensational. And he should only get better,” Souness said, as per the Mirror

“He’s not the most clinical and he will accept that, he should be well into his 20s playing for that team and I think he will, playing in this side with these players.

“I’d give [Player of the Year] to him right now, I think he has been fabulous.”
