Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has claimed that the Reds have been making their own attempt at the possible capture of Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax this summer.
Liverpool had a very leaky defence for much of last season until the club made the bold move of spending a record sum of money on the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the 2018 January transfer window.
That recruit and the arrival of Alisson from AS Roma has transformed the Reds into one of the best defences in the Premier League after finishing the campaign with 97 total points.
After the rise of Ajax in European football, most of the Dutch side’s players are expected to be chased by other big clubs and their star defender Matthijs de Ligt has been deemed as a target for the Liverpool.
The 19-year-old star, who is valued at £57m as per AS, has often been linked with a switch to Anfield as his stock in the transfer market continues to rise.
Balague suggested that the Catalan giants believe that have the De Ligt deal tied up, whilst claiming that he has also been talking to Liverpool, when speaking on BBC’s Five Live Football Daily podcast on Thursday night:
“They (Barcelona) think they have De Ligt, even though both Liverpool and PSG have also been talking to him.
