Gullit mocks Man United with Matthijs de Ligt comments and gives Liverpool hope

Former Dutch footballer Ruud Gullit has mocked Manchester United with his comments on why he believes Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt is unlikely to choose a move to Old Trafford this summer.

The defender has emerged as one of European football’s golden talents after an inspiring season which saw him lead Ajax to the semifinal of the Champions League for the first time in several years as they lost out narrowly to Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the tie.

In fact, after Liverpool had defied all of the odds to thrash Barcelona in the other semifinal of the competition, the Reds were tipped to face Ajax in the final.

De Ligt is being targetted by all of the major clubs, including Liverpool and their fierce rivals, Manchester United.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of a reliable defender but Gullit has suggested that their lack of Champions League football rules them out of the chase for the Ajax star.

The ex-Dutch footballer has given Liverpool hope in signing De Ligt by stating that the player is only likely to choose a side involved in the Champions League – the competition which the Reds won last term.

Via Goal.com, Gullit said: “I don’t think it’ll be Manchester United, they don’t play in the Champions League. I think he wants to play in the Champions League, so that’s unfortunate for Manchester United.”
