James Pearce warns that Liverpool contract talks with ‘model pro’ could prove to be ‘tricky’

Respected journalist James Pearce has suggested that Liverpool might not have it entirely their way in an attempt to convince James Milner to commit his future to the club.

The veteran Englishman decided to move to Anfield after his contract with Manchester City expired a couple of years ago.

Milner has proven to be a very good servant of the Reds ever since his move and his experience has helped Jurgen Klopp’s side make significant progress over the past two seasons.

The former Newcastle and Aston Villa star was a vital part of the Liverpool team which fought hard for the Premier League title last term before winning the Champions League by beating Tottenham Hotspur in June.

With Milner’s contract set to expire at the end of this season, the club might prioritize the idea of renewing his deal, and James Pearce insists that might prove to be a little ‘tricky’.

“The hope is that it gets sorted in the next few months.”, he said, writing during a Q&A for The Athletic

“Milner spoke in pre-season about how he was still waiting for talks to start. He made it clear to the club at the back end of last season that he was keen to stay beyond the summer of 2020.

“It’s a tricky one as he’s a high wage earner having been signed on a free but I really hope they can agree at least a 12-month extension.

“He’s a model pro and what he gives this team extends far beyond his performances on the pitch.”
