Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted about a potential new role in the team for returning defender Joe Gomez as the Reds brace themselves for a massive climax to the season.
Klopp’s men are in the midst of an epic battle for the Premier League title, while their hopes of winning the Champions League remain alive as well.
Liverpool had been without star defender Joe Gomez for quite a while, due to an injury which the Englishman suffered earlier in the season.
Gomez has finally recovered from his injury lay off and that has come at a very important stage of the campaign when all players in the squad will be needed to turn up.
The young defender cemented his place in the Liverpool starting eleven last season as a centre-back as he formed a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk during the second half of the year.
But after returning from injury this month, Klopp has revealed that Gomez will also be considered as an option to play at right-back.
With Nathaniel Clyne out on loan, an injury to Alexander-Arnold could prove to be a big worry.
And perhaps that is why Klopp is now counting on Gomez as a full-back as well.
“Absolutely [he looks strong]. Ox and Joe both did really well at Leicester, it was a brilliant game by all of the boys, to be honest, I watched it back. It looked really good.” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website
“It’s clear they still need time to get full match fitness but it’s nice to have them back and now Joe first as an option. He played right full-back, we need him as this option as well.
“We all know he played a wonderful season at the centre-half position until his injury, but he can play both and it’s good to have him.”
