Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Gini Wijnaldum, effectively hinting at why the Dutchman has been preferred to new signing Fabinho in the midfield role so far.
Following the signings of Naby Keita and Fabinho over the summer, the Liverpool midfield was expected to be almost completely overhauled for the new season.
However, Jurgen Klopp has chosen to keep players like Wijnaldum in the starting eleven, despite the availability of new midfielder Fabinho.
Speaking on why he has decided to start the Dutchman instead, Klopp explained that the qualities of Wijnaldum suited what he seeks from the team.
“Gini can switch from one mindset to the other and that is pretty good for us,” he explained.
“If you ask me he was brilliant in pre-season as the eight. He was good as the six but brilliant as the eight. That’s why we never had any doubts about him. He can play both.
“It was always clear he would be in the mix for the six position. He has worked hard and plays it very well. He’s a good footballer, but it is important that you have the kind of mindset that you can cool yourself down in different situations.”
