The Liverpool squad might not have too many flaws at this point in time, considering how the club became the first ever to finish a Premier League season with as many as 97 total points without managing to actually win the title.
Last summer’s big spending is unlikely to resume, especially if the Reds do go on to be crowned champions of Europe by beating Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid.
Nonetheless, an opportunity to sign some of European football’s hottest talents will be available for Jurgen Klopp, following the sudden rise of Ajax.
Most of the Dutch side’s players are being linked with other big clubs and their young captain Matthijs de Ligt appears to have caught the eye of everyone.
The defender has shown in the Champions League this season that he has a very bright future and the big question is whether that future will still be with Ajax.
For Dutch football legend Jaap Stam, £60m-rated De Ligt – who has been linked to Man United and Barcelona – is a player who would fit in at a club like Liverpool.
“It’s important that he’ll get playing time,” Stam said, as per Metro.
“If you look at the squads: Barcelona, after losing to Liverpool (in the Champions League semi-final), probably wants to strengthen their squad, especially in defence, if you ask me.
“The question is how they are going to solve that problem. I think that Matthijs de Ligt would be a good fit though. It will be great to see how he performs against better players in a better league, not just every few weeks, but every weekend.
“The same goes for Liverpool. We all know who is their biggest defensive star – his Dutch colleague (Van Dijk) – the other players, Lovren and Matip, rotate quite a lot.”
