Former Liverpool and Newcastle striker Michael Owen has revealed that the Reds were actually willing to end Steven Gerrard’s career at Anfield, a little earlier than the midfielder’s exit eventually happened.
Gerrard made a name for himself as one of the best to ever grace the pitch for Liverpool as he spent his entire career in English football representing the Reds, whom he famously won the 2005 Champions League crown with.
The Englishman came close to winning the Premier League title on a couple of occasions and of course, the most notable moment came in the 2013/14 season where he slip saw the team lose to Chelsea, as the title was effectively gifted to Manchester City.
Even though Gerrard his career with Reds as a true Liverpool legend in 2015, his former teammate Michael Own has revealed that the club was getting ready to get rid of him before his eventual departure.
Owen claims that Liverpool wanted to ditch the ex-England international two years before his exit.
As quoted in the Mirror, he said: “In Steven’s case, I severely doubt whether he really wanted to go and play in the States in 2015.
“I’ve heard that the club wanted him out two years prior to when he actually left.”
